Facebook Opens India Office To House More Sales And Operations Staff

Earlier this morning, social networking giant Facebook announced on its blog that, one week after it said it would be opening an office in Austin, Texas, it will set up an additional support center in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, the capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh. In the statement, the company says both offices will allow them to better serve its users, advertisers and developers. Facebook added that it is currently recruiting people to staff the online sales and operations teams for both office locations.

PayPal Halts Personal Payment Transactions In India

PayPal isn't working properly in India. eBay's electronic payment juggernaut appears to be blocking personal transactions to or from accounts of India-based users. It is reversing personal transaction. Transactions involving businesses are still allowed. A reader checked in with us yesterday to let us know PayPal notified him that the company had stopped allowing personal payments to be sent to or from India (full e-mail can be found below). This does not appear to be an isolated incident: see here, here and here for more reports, although we gather commercial payment transactions are unaffected at this point.

New Enterprise Associates (NEA) this morning announced (PDF) the official close of its thirteenth fund, which it began investing in May 2009. At nearly $2.5 billion, it is comparable in size to NEA’s prior fund, which closed in 2006 and was just over $2.5 billion. According to NEA, its fund XIII represents an estimated 17 percent of all U.S. venture capital funds raised in 2009 and is the largest single fund raised since 2007. Mobile Web Usage Keeps On Growing, And Growing, And Growing …

Browser maker Opera has released its latest 'State of the Mobile Web' report this morning, claiming that there was a huge surge in mobile web usage past September. Last month, more than 35.6 million people used Opera Mini (which is now serving over 500 million pageviews per day on average on a wide range of mobile devices), up 11.5% compared to August 2009 and more than 150% compared to September 2008. The Norway software developer also claims more than 2 petabytes of data is now processed by its servers on a monthly basis. That'd be 1000 terabytes.

This one slipped through the cracks, but apparently Brad Bostic, who co-founded mobile Q&A answer service ChaCha together with current CEO Scott Jones back in 2006, has stepped down as President of the company and will not be replaced. In an interview with the Indianapolis Business Journal, Bostic stresses that he will stay involved with the company as an advisor and strategist, saying ChaCha has matured enough for him no longer to be needed for day-to-day operations. “I’m doing some evangelism for the company at trade shows, at conferences. [To say I] ‘left’ is not the appropriate characterization,” Bostic said.

Finnish mobile giant Nokia has announced that it is trimming down and cutting over 600 positions, mainly in marketing and sales departments. The Nokia Research Center (NRC) will also focus on fewer research areas in the future.
