Powerset's Plan B: Bribe Bloggers

Entities Mentioned

  1. Powerset who recently launched with their much hyped "Natural Language Search" are now paying bloggers with t-shirts if they write positive reviews about their search results. This reminds me of the scandal where Microsoft sent laptops to bloggers who wrote postively about them.

    But Powerset wins in many more ways:

    1. Bloggers will link to the search results in their posts, boosting their search rank.
    2. They will wear the free t-shirts with the Powerset logo.
    3. They get positive reviews even if the bloggers genuinely do not like their search results.

    If their technology really worked, then they would have got the positive reviews already. I guess they are onto plan B: free t-shirts.

    For the full email from them, see below.

    "Greetings friends of Powerset,

    Since we have so many Club Powerset t-shirts left over from our launch party, we've decided to give them away. However, nothing in life is free, but some things are easy.

    All you have to do is write a blog post highlighting something cool, unique, interesting or surprising that you found in the Factz section of Powerset. Factz show up whenever you type in a topic name found in Wikipedia or when you ask a simple question. We've written a blog post to give you all the details you need to find Factz;

    Once you've written your post, send us an e-mail at feedback@powerset.com with your t-shirt size, address, and link to your blog. On Friday, June 20th, Powerset will post links to the best blog posts and send out t-shirts to those who participated.

    We look forward to your creativity!

    Cheers,

    The Powerset Team"

"We didn't say anything about writing a positive post. All we ask is that you use Powerset to find Factz, which is an interesting feature that people often miss when they give a cursory glance to Powerset.

For example, try india and note that we find a sentence that states india:produces:engineers. Cool, huh? :)
