Tachyon’s Quillpad recently added transliteration support for Punjabi and Nepali: http://quillpad.in/. Quillpad’s statistical machine learning based approach is a major improvement over previous deterministic ITRANS based algorithms. Quillpad claims that given sufficient training data, they can add support for any Indian Indian language in just a few hours . With the latest addition of Punjabi and Nepal, it seems that is exactly what they are doing. In addition, they offer support for Hindi, Bengali, Gujurati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu. Rediff is licensing Quillpad’s technology for their email and instant messenger client.
Currently the only other machine learning based system on the market is made by Google with support for Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
